Halloween: No Trick, Treat Yourself! (Ciera)

Halloween can be what you want it to be, even if that's absolutely nothing at all. But for those seeking to do something to mark the day, here are some (hopefully) thought-provoking words.

This festive season doesn’t have to be about eating a bunch of sweets, going to a party or curling up with a scary film. It can be, if you want it to, but however you like to treat yourself is totally valid and encouraged!

If you like writing, why not start that new notebook you have been saving? The one with the pretty pages and that addictive new-book smell.

If you have a soft spot for Disney, why not throw the spooky theme of the day completely out of the window and aim to have the cutest most Disney-esque movie session possible?

If you’re a music lover, indulge in your favourite tracks that little bit extra. That favourite song of yours can be played fifteen times in a row. There is no such thing as too much in this regard if it brings you joy.

If you want to participate in Halloween but don’t like how it picks up pace at night, why not go for a walk during the day to have a look at the decorations on people’s houses? If going out does not feel possible or comfortable for you right now, why not look at some decor videos on YouTube indoors instead? Plenty of people prefer staying inside on Halloween night, myself included, so try not to be too harsh on yourself. There is no set “expectation” for how Halloween should or shouldn’t be spent.

If you like ambient sounds, searching up ‘Halloween Fireplace’ online will give you a great selection of atmospheric, cosy background noise to accompany whatever you plan to do, even if you can’t make it out of bed and lay there listening in. You can find ones with rain, crackling fireplaces, thunderstorms and more.

It’s more than okay if you spend the day wishing for the cheer of those around you to just be over. It’s more than valid if you go out to a party and appear happy on the outside but feel like a muddle of emotions internally. You know how much you have fought through to continue holding on. You know how difficult your days have been leading up to you reading this now.

Please remember that you have so much to be proud of. You’re here and you have made it to another Halloween, and that is a great achievement in and of itself. You are special, you matter and even when your mind doubts it, you are incredibly loved and needed in this world. So keep holding on. I love you.
